Pioneering Women Of The American Civil War ~ Sarah Rosetta Wakeman
Here is an amazing short video I discovered from Uniquely New York, about one of the many Civil War Women that fought for the Union Army disguised as a man. Sarah Rosetta Wakeman was born on January 16, 1843 in Bainbridge, New York. On August 30, 1862 she enlisted under the name of Lyons Wakeman with the 153rd New York Infantry Regiment. This video short was crafted to give the viewer a brief glimpse into the courageous life of a young woman who’s life came to an abrupt end in a regimental hospital in New Orleans on June 19, 1864. Her courage can be witnessed in a brief letter she wrote home stating “I don’t know how long before I shall have to go into the field of battle. For my part I don’t care. I don’t feel afraid to go.” The more I learn about these Pioneering Women of the American Civil War like Sarah Rosetta Wakeman the more I want to know. This video will surely please any Civil War enthusiast.
