In this installment of Pioneering Women of Civil War America ~ Clara Barton, a six-year-old female Avatar from the Clara Barton Elementary School of Anaheim (California) Elementary School District interviews a talking picture of Clara Barton. The eight minutes of this highly creative and entertaining video, titled “History of Clara Barton,” passes by with the blink of an eye in covering a biographical sketch of the woman, who most famously became known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” during the American Civil War. Especially highlighted is her fulfilling life as a teacher, principal, clerk in the United States Patent Office, nurse, humanitarian/social reformer, lecturer, creator of the Office of Missing Soldiers, founder and first president of the American Red Cross, and activist of woman’s suffrage and equal rights and civil rights for freedmen.

While doing some research, quite sometime ago, I discovered the story of Clara Barton A Real American Hero. As many of my readers know, I like to feature interesting videos that tell the real life story of these Civil War Women like Clara Barton. During the American Civil War she served as a nurse, cook, and comforting soul to all those who needed her help, earning her the title “Angel of the Battlefield.” With the end of the war in April 1865, she traveled to Europe where she became aware of an Organization appropriately named the Red Cross. After returning home, Barton was convinced the United States should join in the global effort to promote the Red Cross network. Working with many prominent people of her era, she founded the American Red Cross in 1881, at age 59, serving as President of the organization until 1904, when she resigned at age 83. Clarissa Harlowe Barton, died on April 12, 1912, at her home in Glen Echo, Maryland, 39 years after the end of the American Civil War. Her legacy to her country, and humankind, can still be witnessed by the dedication in the volunteers of the American Red Cross to this day.
