In this installment of Pioneering Women of the Civil War I would like to introduce you to Amelia Bloomer. Born in 1818 in Homer New York, Amelia was a school teacher until she moved to Seneca Falls. In 1848 she attended the Woman’s Rights Convention, which inspired her to start her own newspaper named The Lily in 1849. She was most notably known as a social reformer, but got credit for being a fashion icon as well. She is credited for the introduction of a more comfortable style of dress that are still referred to as bloomers to this day. In 1851 she was also responsible for introducing her cousin Elizabeth Cady Stanton to Susan B. Anthony. The rest as they say is history.
