In this documentary presentation made for the Gilder Lehrman Civil War Essay Contest in 2016, by Phoebe Huang, The Motivations For Civil War Women To Fight were many that included patriotism, romance, independence, pay, and adventure. It is estimated that hundreds of women on either side of the conflict fought as soldiers alongside their male counterparts. A soldier that served with Jenny Hodgers, aka Albert Cashiers said; “When I was examined for enlistment, I was not stripped and a woman would not have any trouble in passing the orientation. There are a variety of other factors in this video that explain how these women were able to hide in plain site without having their true identity discovered.
